Method 1 — How to Do a Barrel Roll on Google
The most famous way to do a barrel roll is through Google Search. This is the original Easter egg that made the phrase famous on the internet starting in 2011.
Steps:
- Open your browser and go to google.com
- Click the search bar
- Type: do a barrel roll (or alternatively: z or r twice)
- Press Enter
- Watch the entire Google search results page spin 360 degrees
That's it. The barrel roll lasts about 1.2 seconds and then the page returns to normal. Google's version always does exactly one rotation — you cannot adjust the speed or count from Google's interface.
Does it still work in 2025? Yes. As of 2025, the Google barrel roll Easter egg is still active on desktop and mobile browsers. It has been working continuously since it was introduced in November 2011, making it one of Google's longest-running Easter eggs.
Why "z or r twice"? This phrase refers to the Nintendo 64 game Star Fox 64. Double-tapping the Z trigger or R shoulder button makes Fox McCloud's ship perform a roll maneuver. Google honored both versions of the phrase — they trigger the same spin.
Method 2 — How to Do a Barrel Roll in Your Browser (This Site)
The barrel roll tool on this page lets you do a barrel roll without Google — and with full control over how many times you spin and how fast.
Steps:
- Use the Quick Presets at the top of the tool to choose how many times to spin (x1, x2, x5, x10, x20, x50, or x100)
- Or type any custom number in the Custom Roll Count field
- Drag the Spin Speed slider left for slow, right for fast
- Click the big "Do A Barrel Roll!" button — or press the Space bar
- The entire page spins the number of times you selected
You can also click the Share button to copy a custom URL with your settings pre-loaded — perfect for sending the barrel roll to friends as a prank.
The fullscreen button (bottom right of the tool) expands the browser to fill your entire screen before spinning — the most immersive way to experience it.
Method 3 — How to Do a Barrel Roll in Star Fox 64
This is the original barrel roll — the one that started it all. Star Fox 64 was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, and the barrel roll move was a core gameplay mechanic that Peppy Hare famously instructs you to perform.
On Nintendo 64 Controller:
- While piloting the Arwing in All-Range Mode or on-rails sections, quickly double-tap the Z button (left side of controller) to roll left
- Or quickly double-tap the R button (right shoulder) to roll right
- The Arwing will perform a spin that deflects incoming laser fire
In Star Fox 64 3D (Nintendo 3DS):
- Double-tap L button to barrel roll left
- Double-tap R button to barrel roll right
Note: Technically, the move in Star Fox 64 is an aileron roll — a pure rotation along the aircraft's longitudinal axis. A true barrel roll in aviation combines roll and loop to follow a helical path. But "barrel roll" is what Peppy shouts, so barrel roll is what it's called.

Both methods work on mobile with slight variations:
Google Method on Mobile:
